Recently, our Operations Manager Jamie spoke at a job seekers forum about Oak Tree and Employment. Here are his key tips to keep in mind when applying for a job:
- Manage Your Online Presence: Remember that employers often do background checks on potential hires, which can include looking at your social media profiles. Make sure to remove or hide any photos, posts, or content that could reflect poorly on you, even from accounts you no longer use. While you may have changed, an employer only sees what’s online, so it’s essential to present yourself in a positive light.
- Be Prepared for Employer Contact: If you’ve applied for a job, be ready for a phone call. Ensure that your voicemail message is professional and polite. Avoid using jokes or casual greetings, as this can give a poor first impression. When speaking on the phone, be courteous, clear, and attentive.
- Practise Good Communication During Interviews: Whether the interview is over the phone or face-to-face, always let the interviewer finish speaking before you respond. Interrupting can come across as rude or impatient. Listen carefully, take a moment to think, and then answer thoughtfully.
- Make a Strong First Impression: When meeting someone for the first time, make eye contact and offer a firm handshake. This shows confidence, respect, and professionalism, setting a positive tone for the conversation.
